How to choose the right size CAT excavator
The right class depends on the job, the access and the transport, not on the biggest number you can afford.
Choosing a size class is the first decision, and it is driven by the work, not by the badge. A machine that is too small will not keep up; one that is too large is expensive to move and harder to place on a tight site.
- Mini, under 10 t. Landscaping, drainage, trenching, utility work and farm jobs, and rental fleets. Easy to transport and cheap to run.
- 10-20 t. General earthmoving, road work and municipal jobs. Often the first machine a contractor buys.
- 20-30 t. The global workhorse, the CAT 320 range, for construction, roads and general digging.
- 30-40 t. Heavier earthmoving and quarry support.
- 40 t+. Mining and quarry production, where structure, cooling and undercarriage matter most.
Once the class is right, condition decides the price. Within one class, hours, undercarriage, hydraulics and attachments move the number far more than the model year. Compare the units in a class on their own numbers before you decide.
