How to read a CAT size number

The number is the classA 320 sits in the 20-ton class and a 349 in the 49-ton class. The number tracks the operating-weight bracket, which is how most buyers shortlist before comparing condition.

The letter is the generationA 320D, a 320D2 and a 320 GC are different vintages and specifications of the same class. Generation and spec move the price more than the badge.

The suffix is the buildTrailing letters describe the undercarriage and spec level — for example L for a long undercarriage, GC for a lighter general-construction build. Always confirm the exact configuration of the unit you buy.

Weight is not the only numberWithin a class, hours, undercarriage, hydraulics and attachments decide the price far more than size. Two units of the same class can be far apart.
